Wollersheim Winery & Distillery builds on 180 years of family traditions
|
In addition to the wine and spirits - to say nothing
of the family tradition - this is what makes Wollersheim special: a long
history that is treasured and built upon for the future, but also
preserved. For generations, farms and wineries would roll out the still to
extend the life and boost the value of grains, and distill brandy to
enjoy to fortify and preserve wines.
When Wollersheim Winery & Distillery in Prairie du Sac, north of Madison, bought a Portuguese still in 2010, that was the approach.
“We started distilling in the winery building,” says distiller Tom
Lenerz. “This still here, on the right, the way it was set up, we could
actually fire it with a natural gas burner. Cooling water was just like a
garden hose hooked up to it to cool it...

Beverage of the Week: Hubbleton Brewing is all the best things about Wisconsin
|
Welcome back to FTW’s Beverage of the Week series. Previously, we’ve folded these in to our betting guides, whether that’s been for the NFL slate or a bizarrely successful run through the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Here, we mostly chronicle and review beers, but happily expand that scope to any beverage that pairs well with sports. Yes, even cookie dough whiskey. Hubbleton Brewing Company’s unofficial motto is along the lines of “it’s only hard to find the first time.” This is untrue. It’s hard to find the second, third and fourth times. But it’s worth it. The space between Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin is filled with lots of things, but nothing more frequent than farmland. I haven’t been to all of them, but I’m reasonably sure Hubbleton is the only one with a working brewery, tap room and beer garden. ...Full Story Ken Notes: This is why you need to read WisCraftNews.com, I thought I knew every craft brewery in the state but this came as a surprise to me. The history of Milwaukee`s tied houses and beer gardens
|
For Lake Effect`s last installment of the Tavern Tuesdays series, Rob Novak shares the lasting legacies of Milwaukee`s beer gardens and tied houses. He is the historic brewing experience coordinator at Old World Wisconsin. Novak starts by explaining the history of beer gardens: "We know that they started in Bavaria and the breweries there, they had these giant lagering caves. They lagered their beer over the summer. By the mid-1500s, they actually were not allowed to brew in the summer. ... So in order to make money in the summer, they decided that they would sell the beer that they have been lagering in their caves."... ...Full Story Ken Notes: 11:35 Must listen to this one... ..

Tattersall`s New Canned Cocktails Debuting at Rock the Garden
|
Summer in a can. Some of y`all got pretty whipped up about a Taco Bell with fast `n` easy taco delivery methods this week. I see you. But let`s take that easy livin` energy to where it really matters: canned cocktails.
Are they the best invention since a Dad came up with the phrase "it`s noon somewhere"? Perhaps.
Tattersall Distilling Co. has been working for nearly three years on their line of canned cocktails. They`ve been releasing seasonal ready-to-drink (easier to just say RTD) bottled cocktails for a while, from the Bootlegger to the Salty Dog. But the move to Wisconsin made it more affordable to use distilled alcohol instead of the more common malt product, which is taxed differently in each state....

We`re finally starting to emerge from Wisconsin`s wintery weather (knock on wood). That means beer garden season is on its way. Here`s

How Anyone Can Design Labels for Drinks
|
To paraphrase first-century Roman gourmet Apicius, we drink with our eyes first. Many of us have ordered a wine or selected a bottle in a store because of its packaging or something about its label. It could be Hendrick’s apothecary-inspired gin design, the pop art that’s adorned Absolut offerings or 19 Crimes’ labels that spring to life with our smartphones...
...Paula Schultz picked up artist gigs in high school and before going on to obtain a bachelors in interdisciplinary art and technology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She interned with Milwaukee Urban Gardens and Do414, and worked on campus as a designer for school restaurants operations. Now, she serves as senior designer for Bently Heritage Estate Distillery in Minden, Nevada, and is also a freelance illustrator for The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times....
...Full Story Ken Notes: Great images in this article. Remember your bottle or can is often the only thing "selling" your product on the store shelf. If you can`t afford a professional, look for talent in schools, art stores, or those seeking pro bono work to start their career. I love the "No Coast Pale Ale" on Moon Man. Your bottle tells your story, make it an interesting one... ..

Move over, hard seltzers: these cans of Wisconsin-made cocktails use real fruit juice but have just 1 gram of carbs

CLINTONVILLE – Supper Club Cocktails Lite premixed
cocktails are made with two shots of Wisconsin innovation, and have a
real chance at appealing to hard seltzer zealots. Each
12-ounce slim can of Garden Party (vodka, watermelon, cucumber and

On (a rum-based blackberry Mojito) ready-to-drink cocktails holds just
one gram of carbs. The original White Claw hard seltzers have two grams
of carbs... ...Supper Club Lite could be a game changer in the ready-to-drink cocktail market, said Arty`s Legendary Cocktails co-owner Tim Pappin, because the cocktails fit the profile of what reportedly makes hard seltzers popular.... ...Full Story Ken Notes: Interesting someone try these and send us a review! ..

Ripon`s Vines & Rushes adds indoor garden to ensure consistent supply, freshness
|
Each year, Vines & Rushes winery tries to implement something new to enhance the customer experience, whether something noticeable to consumers or something internally. This year has been “the year of hydroponics” at Vines & Rushes as its newest addition is an indoor garden that grows lettuce for salads, shortening the trip from farm-to-table. The inclusion of an indoor garden originated as a way to avoid supply chain hiccups, but has evolved into a natural extension of the business, according to Vines & Rushes owner Ryan Prellwitz... ...Full Story ..

Sip the Summer Away at These All-American Beer Gardens
|
What’s one of the best ways to beat the stifling summer heat? By downing an ice-cold brew at one of many sprawling beer gardens, of course. While the Germans may have perfected the art of imbibing outdoors, we’ve gotten pretty damn good at it right here in the U.S.A.
# 5. Estabrook Beer GardenWhere to find it: Milwaukee, Wisconsin Why you should go: When Estabrook Beer Garden first debuted, it marked America’s first truly public beer garden in nearly 100 years. Inspired by Milwaukee’s
rich brewing legacy, it’s modeled after the beer gardens found in
modern-day Munich. This verdant retreat within Estabrook Park sits on a
bluff overlooking the Milwaukee River. The unique location allows
visitors to arrive by foot, bike, kayak, canoe, or car. Whet your
whistle with a selection of beers imported from Munich Hofbräuhaus while
reconnecting with Mother Nature. And since it’s a public park, people
can opt to pack their own picnic baskets or order traditional Bavarian
fare... ...Full Story Ken Notes: Nice to make a list for a change.... ..

2021 Milwaukee beer garden guide
|
Published Jul 09, 2021 at 9:01 AM
As a city that experiences a long, often brutal winter,
Milwaukee loves soaking up the sun and warmth in its many beer gardens
as soon as the weather permits, especially because we can enjoy them
with our pets and families, too.
In a COVID-19-rocked 2020, those beer gardens were lifelines – a
way to be among people in a responsible, socially distanced way. So far,
2021 is looking a fair bit like last year and so we’ll likely need beer
gardens just as much.
Here’s what we know about the 2021 beer garden season, but keep
checking back for regular updates to this post as more information
becomes available.
Note also that Milwaukee County Parks are seeking seasonal employees. Details are here.

It will feature some of the beers that "built Milwaukee," including Pabst, Blatz, Schlitz and Miller, the news release said. 303 Main St., has brought a Racine native back to his hometown as well
as RBC’s first-ever German lager to its taps. Additionally, a hazy IPA
